That meant Amazon had to be ready a year early. Not long after signing, the NFL added another wrinkle: The league was ending its Thursday night deal with Fox after the 2021 season, a year earlier than expected. paid under the previous deal, but less than what other networks pay for Sunday and Monday timeslots. In March 2021, Amazon agreed to pay about $1.2 billion a year for exclusive rights to “Thursday Night Football”- an 80% increase over what Fox Corp. They shop more than people who aren’t Prime customers. Prime members pay $139 a year to get faster, free shipping, as well as access to video and music services. “Let’s look at it as a once-in-a-decade opportunity to create appointment viewing for tens of millions of fans.”Īmazon has long invested in entertainment to entice customers to its Prime business. “We said let’s step back and look at it differently,” Donoghue recalled. A near 20-year ESPN veteran hired by Amazon in 2018, she drafted a document that outlined all the reasons that NFL rights would benefit the company and its customers. But it had a harder time convincing major sports leagues to entrust a streaming service with multibillion-dollar media rights.Īs the NFL prepared to seek a new round of media deals, Marie Donoghue, Amazon’s vice president of global sports video, moved to convince her bosses to make a big offer. In the US, Amazon started showing some exclusive New York Yankees games and became the streaming home of soccer’s Seattle Sounders. Amazon snagged rights to stream the US Open tennis tournament in the UK and Ireland and acquired Premier League rights in the UK, as well as the Champions League soccer tournament in the UK, Italy and Germany. Deals there are shorter than in the US, creating more opportunities for newcomers. The company made early headway streaming sports in Europe. But it had never had an NFL package to itself. Amazon had streamed NFL Thursday games that also aired on the NFL Network and Fox. Three of the league’s biggest partners, CBS, NBC and Fox, had all aired Thursday night games and found it hard to make money, in part because the league tended to stick them with less-desirable matchups. “Thursday Night Football” provided Amazon with an opportunity to get in the big game. But these deals have mostly been for partial packages or in smaller markets. have started to buy their way into this exclusive club, acquiring rights to baseball, soccer, tennis and other sports around the world. Over the last couple of years, Amazon and Apple Inc. With an NFL deal in hand, Amazon is positioned to capture a cut of the $66 billion US TV advertising market. Sports accounted for nearly all of the 100 most-watched broadcasts on TV last year, with professional football alone amounting to 75 of them. While films and TV series have shifted to streaming, people still need cable or satellite TV to watch most live sports. It’s also the last stronghold of the networks. Sponsors flock to the NFL because it’s one of the few places to reach a large live audience-this year’s Super Bowl, for instance, drew an audience of 112 million in the US, about seven times the number who tuned in for soccer’s World Cup final four years earlier. “We’ll look back on this season of Amazon exclusively producing and distributing NFL games as a turning point in sports broadcasting.” “This is an inflection point,” said Daniel Cohen, executive vice president of global media rights consulting at Octagon, a division of the ad giant Interpublic Group of Cos. If Amazon can attract the millions of viewers and prestige advertisers that football usually draws, other leagues, like the NBA, may be more willing to offer exclusive packages to online heavyweights. It’s the first time a streaming service has obtained exclusive, season-long rights to NFL games in the US, and it presents a big challenge to major networks-like CBS, ESPN, NBC and Fox-that have dominated televised sports for generations.

Its president also said it was working with regulators to explore ways in which the total amount of time minors spent on gaming could be capped across all titles in the industry. Tencent later announced new measures to reduce the time and money children spend on games, starting with Honor of Kings. Gaming companies have been on edge in recent weeks as state media criticised gaming addiction among young people, signalling a regulatory crackdown.Ī state media outlet described online games as "spiritual opium" this month and cited Tencent's "Honor of Kings" in an article that called for more curbs on the industry, battering shares in the world's largest gaming firm by revenue. In game it looks like a little half-circle looking icon. Crafted items go to your inventory by default too. If a section is full, the gear will be placed into your inventory instead. This is where new gear typically gets stored. Up to a maximum of 5 Materia can be added to any one item. The more materia that gets melded, the lower your success rate. Some items allow you to push past that limit, but with a risk of losing your Materia. Gear usually has a base amount of Materia Slots, like one or two. As long as a slot is open, the chances of success are 100%. These are little jewel like spheres which you can meld into your gear for some additional stats, provided the item has Materia Slots. Doing so will reset the Spiritbond back to 1% and restart the process. At 100% you can extract a piece of materia from it. When you use gear in combat it will start to accumulate Spiritbond. You can also use Dark Matter to repair gear if you have the crafting level required (shown on the item menu), but I'd advise staying away from those if only for some extra inventory space. Upon reaching 0% the gear will become useless they'll still be useable with no stats but repair them as soon as possible at a town Mender. These stats can be influenced by choosing different gear sets and by using materia. Str, Dex, Vit, Int, Mind - These are your main stats and you don't have much influence over these. Generally, higher Item Level means better gear. Dungeons will start having Item Level requirements, so be sure to upgrade. Between my son and I both giving my husband directions, we somehow ended up with a tree practically stuck between our vehicle and our trailer. We did have to back Birdy up a long driveway to get into our campsite. We felt like we owned our little piece of the park. Our site backed up to the Black Hills National Forest lands at the edge of the park, and we were a great distance from our neighbors. We knew we wanted a large site with trees and a bathhouse, making the Ranch Camp a great choice for us. Heading into the Ranch Camp A Cute Casita at the Ranch Camp Our Ranch Camp Siteįor us, selecting a spot was a no brainer. It’s quite a hike down the hill to get to the pool and back. The main drawback is the distance from the amenities. The sites are nicely spaced, and some are bordered by national forest lands. Ranch Camp: You’ll find some of the prettiest sites in the camp in the woodlands at the top of the hill (if you consider pine trees beautiful, as I clearly do). However, it is more remote and does not have a bathhouse. The Island: Large beautiful sites with plenty of room and trees make this area a scenic choice. The Lower Ranch Camp is farther up the hill from the amenities and does not have its own bathhouse. Though there are not many trees along these spots, they are located at the base of a hill and receive some shade. Lower Ranch Camp: This area is also popular with big rigs since the large sites are easy to get into. The Line Camp is halfway up the hill from the amenities and does not have its own bathhouse. Some sites are in a lovely patch of trees. Many big rigs like to line the spots along the entrance to the Line Camp. Line Camp: Campers in this area have more room to breath, with larger sites and more scenery. The Main Camp is also home to the cabins. This section is close to all of the amenities and has its own bathhouse. I felt that the campsites seemed crowded in here since. Main Camp: This area is more wooded than the base camp, but the sites are on the smaller side, as well. The Base Camp is the only section with satellite tv, and it does not have a shower house, if those are important to you. Though slightly less scenic, it is close to the park’s amenities. Here’s a rundown of the areas you can choose from:īase Camp: This area is most like a traditional RV park with smaller sites and fewer trees (that being said, there are still pretty nice trees). I’ll do my best to give you an overview of the main areas, but don’t hesitate to call the park to ask for recommendations for which one would best fit your needs. If you’re planning a trip to the Black Hills of western South Dakota, you need to put Rafter J at the top of your campground list. Out of dozens of campgrounds in a dozen states, this was my absolute all-time favorite. The beautiful woodlands, the rolling green hills, the brilliant blue skies, and the perfect temperatures had won me over. As I stood beneath the towering ponderosa pines of Rafter J Bar Ranch, I was tempted to cancel the rest of our trip (read all about it here: Birdy NPS 100) and stay here for the duration of our vacation. I pulled the towels from me and tossed them onto the floor, then covered myself with the down comforter, and shut my eyes. With a towel wrapped around my body and another one around my head, I returned to my bedroom and slipped back into my bed. With the nostalgia still clinging to me like shrink-wrap, I went into the shower and let the hot water and soap pull me into consciousness. “There’s my girl, there’s my girl,” she sang. I slept until noon, and when I woke, my head was cloudy and uncertain for a moment I felt like a child waking from a nap, and for an even briefer moment I remembered my mother lifting me from my bed and holding me against her chest. In the background, I could see the older daughter cozy in a recliner, reading The Hobbit. His younger daughter, Olivia, was hamming it up for the camera. I crept into the kitchen for a sip of juice, then sat down at my computer and logged on to Facebook. Yet through the cake of heavy makeup, I could still see little me. Who the hell are you, Melissa Fletcher? Was it even possible to be someone different? I lifted my chin, puckered my lips, raised a flirty eyebrow. I pulled black eyeliner across the rim of my lashes.
